Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an ancient holistic system of health and healing, based on the notion of harmony and balance, and employing the ideas of moderation and prevention. TCM has been practiced for thousands of years and is built on the Qi, or ‘life energy’, that flows through the body across meridian channels. When this flow of Qi becomes blocked or disrupted the body is at risk of imbalance which results in illness or disease. Common lifestyle factors including stress, overwork, poor diet, disease pathogens and environmental conditions may all disrupt the flow of Qi.
In seeking to rebalance the body and restore the healthy flow of Qi, TCM is a complete system of health care with its own unique theories of anatomy, health and treatment. It places an emphasis on diet and prevention using acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, massage and exercise. The overarching focus is on stimulating the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
‘Cupping’ is a lesser-known TCM technique that uses small glass cups as suction devices that are placed on the skin. Cupping is much like the inverse of massage – rather than applying pressure downwards on muscles, it uses gentle pressure to bring them upward. Cupping therapy can loosen muscles, encourage blood flow, and sedate the nervous system, which makes it an excellent treatment for high blood pressure. Cupping therapy is particularly useful in relieving back and neck pains, stiff muscles, anxiety, fatigue, migraines, and rheumatism.
Moxibustion (Moxa) is another lesser-known technique based in Traditional Chinese Medicine and one utilised at our clinic. It involves the burning of mugwort, a small, spongy herb, to facilitate healing. The purpose of Moxa is to strengthen the blood, stimulate the flow of qi, and maintain general health. Our treatments typically cause the patient to experience a pleasant heating sensation that penetrates deep into the skin, but without causing pain. The use of Moxa is effective in expelling lasting and troublesome cold or flu symptoms as it warms the meridians, leading to a smoother flow of blood and Qi.
